Russia, for decades a communist country fiercely guarded under an umbrella of total secrecy, and closed-in behind what the West came to call the Iron Curtain. David, a man who grew up during the Cold War years, had a fascination with the Soviet republics. His coincident dread and curiosity later became eager anticipation, and a decade after the fall of communism, he decided he must travel there to see for himself what surprises Russia held for him.

He embarked on a trip to Siberia, more because of his interest to visit the country than the woman he had met over the Internet, for he suspected she was not sincere. In a strange encounter, he meets with another woman and falls in love at first sight just the night before returning to Moscow.

"She had such sweetness capable of melting the hardest and the strongest. She fascinated me with her melodious voice, and her personality trapped me like a spider in its web. There was some magnetism in the way she smiled, coupled with an air of innocence and shyness that exuded truthfulness and complete absence of malice."

David narrates with vivid details his journey, accompanied by some frustrations caused by the language barrier, but full of many pleasant surprises with the people he met, as well as his fascination with Moscow's historical sites. He returned to Siberia six months later, in the winter, braving temperatures of thirty degrees below zero, to meet again with the woman he left his heart with for a romantic and lovely experience.

This is not a story about arriving at a destination, but about living life, pursuing a dream, being open to adventure, and accepting the outcome. Because after all, life is a journey and we enrich our selves when we refuse to be spectators and decide to take an active part in it.

Follow the author through Siberia and Moscow and chase after his steps with detailed descriptions of his travel experiences. Enter his mind and heart and thrill with him as he discovers that feelings know no physical barriers, and are only subject to fate and time.

A century ago, outsiders saw China as a place where nothing ever changes. Today the country has become one of the most dynamic regions on earth. In Oracle Bones, Peter Hessler explores the human side of China's transformation, viewing modern-day China and its growing links to the Western world through the lives of a handful of ordinary people. In a narrative that gracefully moves between the ancient and the present, the East and the West, Hessler captures the soul of a country that is undergoing a momentous change before our eyes.

Two strangers teamed up for a once-in-a-lifetime journey that left them both changed forever.

Nancy and John arrived in Pakistan with little more than bikes and dreams. The ensuing year found them pedaling remote pathways of Asia, over mountains and through deserts, dodging traffic, holy cows - and the occasional rock thrown at them from a cliff by hostile natives.

They explored back roads and tiny villages rarely exposed to western eyes and fell in love - both with the beauty of the lands they traveled and with each other.

So as not to seem completely self-indulgent to his friends and family, Conor started his year-long trip around the world with a three-month stint volunteering in the Little Princes Orphanage in war-torn Nepal. What began as a cover story changed Conor’s life, and the lives of countless others, forever. The turning point occurred during Conor's second stint as a volunteer with Little Princes. While playing on the roof of the orphanage, Conor was approached by a woman who would turn out to be the mother of two of the wards. Over hours of conversations with her, Conor learned the truth. Many of the little princes were not orphans but children that had been taken from their homes by child traffickers. In addition to losing two of her boys, this woman, while under the control of a human trafficker, was doing her best to keep seven other terrified kids alive. Conor's life changed in those moments, as he decided to commit himself to these unfortunates. After securing spots in an orphanage for all seven and arranging for an excellent local staff to run the Little Princes Orphanage, Conor escaped Nepal, one day before revolution erupted in Kathmandu. After arriving home, Conor received a devastating email reporting that the seven kids had disappeared, snatched once again by the same trafficker. Soon he was back in Kathmandu, riding through the chaotic streets on the back of a local's motorcycle, searching for his kids, seven needles in a corrupt haystack. And that is where Conor's story begins.Conor pledged to not only start a new orphanage for these seven but also to start an entire new programme dedicated to reuniting kids with their lost families in remote villages in the Nepalese hills. He lived under constant fear of retribution from the traffickers. He needed to return to the US by 22 December, both because that was the agreed-upon panic date on which friends would alert authorities if he didn't return, and because it was the date that the woman he'd fallen in love with over email would arrive at his door so they could, at long last, meet in person.Conor's tale is an epic thriller, and a love story, and is best told by Conor himself.

The bestselling author of The Sex Lives of Cannibals returns with a sharply observed, hilarious account of his adventures in China—a complex, fascinating country with enough dangers and delicacies to keep him, and readers, endlessly entertained.

Maarten Troost has charmed legions of readers with his laugh-out-loud tales of wandering the remote islands of the South Pacific. When the travel bug hit again, he decided to go big-time, taking on the world’s most populous and intriguing nation. In Lost on Planet China, Troost escorts readers on a rollicking journey through the new beating heart of the modern world, from the megalopolises of Beijing and Shanghai to the Gobi Desert and the hinterlands of Tibet.

Lost on Planet China
finds Troost dodging deadly drivers in Shanghai; eating Yak in Tibet; deciphering restaurant menus (offering local favorites such as Cattle Penis with Garlic); visiting with Chairman Mao (still dead, very orange); and hiking (with 80,000 other people) up Tai Shan, China’s most revered mountain. But in addition to his trademark gonzo adventures, the book also delivers a telling look at a vast and complex country on the brink of transformation that will soon shape the way we all work, live, and think. As Troost shows, while we may be familiar with Yao Ming or dim sum or the cheap, plastic products that line the shelves of every store, the real China remains a world—indeed, a planet--unto itself.

Maarten Troostbrings China to life as you’ve never seen it before, and his insightful, rip-roaringly funny narrative proves that once again he is one of the most entertaining and insightful armchair travel companions around.

“[Jaume] Sanllorente’s story, reminiscent of Greg Mortenson’s Three Cups of Tea, is remarkable and uplifting.”—Booklist

In 2003, Jaume Sanllorente was a young journalist leading an active and exciting life in Barcelona—no more idealistic than any other young professional. Then a travel agent convinced him to spend his vacation in India. Amazed by what he saw in the land of sacred cows and shocking poverty, Jaume was transformed.

That experience lead him to reconsider the world he lived in and caused him to think that he might do something to make it a little better. He devoted himself to helping a small orphanage in Bombay, one that was about to close its doors and send its forty children back to the streets (and the brothels) from which they had been rescued. Jaume seized the moment, determined not to let that happen. As a consequence, he changed his life, and much more as well.

In Bombay Smiles, Jaume Sanllorente gives us an insightful and loving vision of a country of great contrasts. He reveals that the secret of his own happiness is in seeking happiness for others.

Bombay Smiles is a story of loneliness, ransoms, dangers, injustices, threats of death, and acts of courage, which give an example to follow in spite of the adversities one might meet. It is a lesson of wise love, surrender, sacrifice, and hope, which invites us to start on the path toward a better world.

Jaume Sanllorente was born in 1976 in Barcelona, Spain. His nonprofit organization, Bombay Smiles, provides schools, homes, and health care to thousands of children in India.
